The first meeting of Stockport Friends of the Earth was held at Stockport Guild Hall and attended by 23 people.
Climate
Chris and Kate were shocked when they attended a meeting in Manchester Town Hall where Dr Kevin Anderson of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research presented the 'Hockey Stick' graph which shows a sharp upturn in temperatures in recent decades with the Earth hotter in the late 20th Century than it has been in the last 1000 years. Equally shocking were the drastic reductions in C02 necessary to meet 2050 targets to prevent runaway global temperatures.
Stockport Friends of the Earth adopted the Big Ask campaign as their National campaign.
248 people signed postcards "Is the Government doing enough about Climate Change?" that were handed over to Stockport's Andrew Stunnel MP to ask the government for a Climate Change Bill.
Monitoring what's going on in Stockport
Stockport Friends of the Earth formed a research sub-group to investigate what's happening to our environment in Stockport. Issues examined under the headings of Air, Earth and Water.
A response was submitted to the Manchester Airport Master Plan consultation.
The Goyt Valley
Stockport Friends of the Earth campaigned to ensure that The Goyt Valley can continue to be enjoyed by the people of Stockport as a tranquil place to visit away from the noise of road traffic.
The group organised a Bank Holiday afternoon walk in our beautiful local countryside. This has become an annual event.
