Monday 29th May - Goyt Valley Walk
Over 50 people including a number of Stockport Friends of the Earth members participated in this afternoon event, organised on Bank Holiday Monday by Stockport Against The Bypass. Stockport residents were able to appreciate the beauty of their local countryside. The Goyt Valley is home to many rare and protected species, and is a valuable natural resource, one of the few truly green areas left in the borough. Wednesday 24th May - Nuclear Recommissioning/Climate talkChris and Kate were shocked when they attended a meeting in Manchester Town Hall where Dr Kevin Anderson of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research presented the 'Hockey Stick' graph which shows a sharp upturn in temperatures in recent decades with the Earth hotter in the late 20th Century than it has been in the last 1000 years. Equally shocking were the drastic reductions in CO2 necessary to meet 2050 targets to prevent runaway global temperatures. (Most people are unaware of this). Tuesday 16th May - CORE meeting hosted by Manchester FOEChris attended a meeting of the Corporate Responsibility Coalition (CORE) which represents over 130 charities and campaigning organisations and believes that corporate accountability will become a reality only when new laws are enacted that make sure companies do not profit at the expense of people and planet. Kate is a regular at these meetings. Monday 20th March - StockportFOE MeetingThis meeting adopted the FOE model constitution, elected officers, bank account signatories and set membership rates. FOE expects local groups to take on at least one National and one Local campaign. The Big Ask was adopted as StockportFOE's National campaign. Monday 20th February - Inaugural MeetingThe first meeting of Stockport Friends of the Earth was held at Stockport Guild Hall and attended by 23 people. Thank you to Les Leggett for kicking off our group! |
