Monday 5th May - Goyt Valley Walk 2008

An afternoon walk in our beautiful local countryside - the Goyt Valley, Bredbury

2008 Goyt Valley Walkers

This year our route took us to Chadkirk past the site of the new Sustrans Connect2 bridge over the River Goyt which will link one side of the valley with the other and makes sense of the paths and routes that have been built over a number of years. The valley is so deep and tree-lined that whilst it lies within a few hundred yards of large urban populations it seems to be a world apart. How fortunate we are to have such wonderful countryside so near to our town centre.

Our walkers passed signs which show that Stockport Council now recognises the importance of the unspoilt countryside near the heart of our town, an issue that Stockport Friends of the Earth have been campaigning on vigorously.

Thanks to Sheila, Chris, Kate and everyone else who helped to make this event a success.

Monday 24th March - Heaton Mersey Easter Fair and Farmers' Market

11am - 3pm St John's Rd, Heaton Mersey (fronting the church) off Didsbury Rd.

Over 30 people stopped in the chilly weather to sign Big Ask postcards for us, nearly all of which were to Ann Coffey MP, who hasn't shown support for the Climate Change Bill so far. Many others took away leaflets for when their hands had defrosted! A big thanks to Hasan and Kate for braving the snow to man the Stockport Friends of the Earth stall, and sharing the soup and flapjacks!

Saturday 2nd February - North West Local Groups GetTogether in Preston

11am - 5pm at St Wilfred's Church Hall.

Stockport FoE members networked with FOE staff and other local groups in our region.

Roger Higman FOE outlined work on the new Bio-diversity Campaign.

Help Save the Woodhead Tunnel for rail, not cables

More information.

Recent information suggests that at some date in the future the cables, if laid, could be moved to make way for a railway, but there would be a cost associated with this.
