Food Chain Campaign
Stockport Friends of the Earth are calling on Government to revolutionise the way we produce meat and dairy.Producing soy to feed animals in factory farms is having a devastating effect on South American rainforests and other important habitats.
Clearing the forests:
Increases the climate-changing gases in the atmosphere
Destroys precious wildlife
Leaves communities without land.
We want Government to shift money away from the factory farms that hold the damaging chain together - and support thriving, planet-friendly farming.
Goyt Valley recognised as Nature Reserve.
Stockport Council recognises the importance of the countryside near the heart of our town.
Stockport Friends of the Earth organised a fourth May Bank Holiday walk in 2009 to appreciate our local countryside.
Renewables
The UK Government made a firm commitment to boost renewable energy by supporting a new EU Directive which says that 15% of all UK energy should come from renewable sources by 2020.We have an opportunity to make sure that the Government supports a strong and sustainable renewable energy strategy at home and in Europe. This means making sure the UK commits to its current target in the EU Directive, and then publishes a robust UK strategy.
Toxic fuels from Canada.
At a seminar this year, we learned that the extraction of unconventional fuels in Canada is producing world-threatening levels of carbon emissions. Expected increases of 65ppm in Carbon emissions from oil sands and shale oil extraction over the next 30 years will negate all carbon savings from renewables and energy efficiency. Significant environmental damage to local forest (which is as important a carbon store as the Amazon basin), wildlife and creation of huge toxic waste water ponds which threaten major water courses. more info
Be ashamed Canada, be very ashamed !!!
