Saturday 23rd July - Renewable Energy Event

Sustainable Living in the Heatons - 11am to 1pm

An opportunity to find out information about renewable energy, saving energy, saving money etc.

Our renewable energy questionnaire received a good response and we made some useful contacts with other stall holders and discussed the green technology they had on show.

Thanks to everyone who completed the questionnaire, with special thanks to Stephen, Paula, Phoebe, Kate, Brigid and Dan, for helping out on the stall.

Saturday/Sunday 2nd/3rd July - The Northern Gathering

This year we were back at the lovely Haworth Youth Hostel, a Victorian mansion overlooking the famous Bronte village, where local group members experienced another weekend of skills, inspiration, and sunshine. A most enjoyable way to spend a couple of days with friends.

Saturday 18th June - Marple Carnival

Memorial Park, Marple. Stockport Friends of the Earth had a stall at this event.

Thanks to Stephen, Paula and Chris for helping on the day with our 3 campaigns and a big thank you to everyone who came along and signed our petitions...

      1. Marple Dale Bridge

This scheme will create a beautiful new route and bridge over the River Goyt which will link one side of the valley with the other and connect together the paths and routes that have been built over a number of years.

The valley is deep and tree-lined and this picturesque, rolling countryside is a world apart making it an ideal escape for local residents from the large urban areas which lie just a few hundred yards away.

It was proposed by Sustrans in 2007 as part of the National Cycle Route 55 and Sustrans and Stockport Council were to share the £500,000 cost of the bridge. Four years on the Council have not resolved all the planning issues, no site work has started. Is the problem not so much a planning issue, but the Council's reluctance to spend the money since the spending review? Yet the Council are happily budgeting this year for £750,000 just to produce more paper to support the SEMMMS road even when it wasn't even listed in the 130 road schemes considered in the spending review. Stockport Council are in danger of losing the funding from Sustrans if they don't pull their finger out.

      2. The 18th June was International Stop Tar Sands Day

Shale oil extraction emits up to eight times more carbon dioxide than conventional oil extraction, destroys ancient forests and it ain't pretty...

Thank you to everyone who signed the petition which helped to raise awareness.

      3. Sign-up for safer energy

As the full extent of the earthquake and tsunami disaster unfolds, our thoughts are with the people affected by the catastrophe in Japan.

Thanks to everyone who signed our petition for a safe and nuclear free future.
