Road refused; good news for sustainable transport

Stockport Friends of the Earth welcomed news that the Department for Transport has refused to fund the SEMMMs £860-million road scheme near Stockport.

Given the importance of climate change and the need to reduce our use of fossil fuels and CO2, spending over £500million on a road to nowhere that will increase greenhouse gas emissions and ruin our beautiful and precious Goyt Valley is beyond comprehension.
Under PFI this road would have cost £860m. As a PFI project this money would have appeared hidden from Council finances, but it would have been local or national tax payers who would have had to foot the bill in the long run!

Road scheme resurrected

Determined to tarmac over local countryside and lock in our dependence on 'fossil' fueled policies, Stockport MBC is pressing ahead with the A555 road scheme which will incorporate only the Poynton bypasses and the Manchester Airport Link Road West.

Compensation - Ask a solicitor about a 'No win no fee' claim.

After all, despite what Stockport MBC would have you believe, if the scheme goes ahead, there will be a lot of disruption, dirt, noise, inconvenience, impact on property values etc. and if you are entitled to compensation, you should claim for it.

Who will pay for any cost overruns when, as often happens with new roads, the project is over budget?

If you pay council taxes of any kind, then it could be you!
