Stockport Council Gets Serious about Carbon.

Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council has adopted a target to reduce emissions across the Borough by 40% by 2020, following the presentation of over 600 postcards signed by Stockport residents to Councillor Stuart Bodsworth, the Executive member for the Environment. (January 2011)

Kate of Stockport Friends of the Earth, campaigner and local resident said: "It is fantastic that the Council has listened to the hundreds of people from Stockport who called for a serious target to cut emissions as part of Friends of the Earth's Get Serious About CO2 campaign."

"Stockport's vision is to be cleaner, greener, safer and stronger. The greener aspect of this vision is now at the forefront of everybody's concern for the environment, and our residents have made sure that we are amongst the leaders in recycling nationwide.
I would like Stockport to be amongst the leaders in other green issues, such as energy conservation and the use of renewable energy."

Cllr Stuart Bodsworth, Executive Councillor (Environment) says..

Cllr Bodsworth

"The short term target that the Stockport Partnership has agreed with the Government is a 10.5% reduction of per capita CO2 emissions in Stockport by 2010/11 from the baseline year of 2005. This was agreed as part of the Stockport Local Area Agreement (LAA)."

"Stockport's total carbon footprint in 2006 (the most recent data provided by Government) was 1.665 million tonnes CO2. This equates to 5.9 tonnes per capita. As Stockport is the 3rd most populous borough in Greater Manchester, the overall figure is high when compared with the rest of the region but the per head figure is lower than the GM and the national average."
