Why Shop Local?     Every Little Helps (Alexi Sayle ad.)

Before you head off to the supermarket, think about taking advantage of the choice your local shops offer. You might be surprised what you find.

Fruit and vegetables are around 30% more expensive in supermarkets than in street markets

Is Stockport a Clone Town?

Nearly half of UK towns are already clone towns - towns easily mistaken for dozens of bland town centres across the country, with the same set of shops to choose from. Communities which keep their local shops going have more character and find that far more money stays in the community. That's why shopping local can make a big difference. Local shops provide jobs and tend to support farmers and producers in our area.

Helping to tackle climate change

We can all help tackle climate change and using your local shops is an easy way to do it. We need to cut down on our carbon dioxide emissions and here's where local shops shine.

Local shops are more energy efficient tha big supermarkets. It would take more than 60 green grocers to match the carbon dioxide emissions from just one average superstore.

Local shops are much more likely to provide local food that hasn't been flown halfway across the world, so it arrives fresh in your basket without pumping out a load of carbon emissions in transit. By walking (or taking the bus) to the local shops instead of driving to the supermarket, you will help to cut traffic pollution, too.
