Scientists urge strong climate targets for 2020

Leading climate scientists have called on the Government to make quicker and deeper emissions cuts.

A new report by the respected Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research demands urgent Government action on climate change.

The report says the UK must adopt at least 42% cuts in carbon emissions by 2020.

It also says cuts must be made here in the UK instead of paying other countries to cut emissions then counting them as ours.

Keeping up to date on climate change

The Tyndall scientists analysed the recommendations of the Committee on Climate Change (CCC).

In December 2008 the CCC suggested two targets for reducing carbon emissions:

The Tyndall report welcomes the CCC's advice but warns:

Good for climate, good for Britain

Making the cuts in this country would also:

We are in the midst of a climate crisis. But if we act now we will do much more than avoid catastrophe.

We will create a safer, cleaner and healthier world for everyone.
