The Government has announced huge airport expansion to match demand for air travel. More flights will damage our environment and our health.

Air travel is the fastest growing source of the greenhouse gases that lead to climate change.

Other problems that are caused by planes include air pollution, noise, road congestion and damage to countryside.

An industry that doesn't pay...

Aviation isn't subject to the same taxes as other forms of transport. Incredibly, airlines pay no tax on fuel.

The end result? Every UK taxpayer effectively subsidises the aviation industry by over £300 per year - whether you fly or not.

This allows the airlines to provide more and more cheap flights. Because of their emissions, cheap flights cost the earth.

...and is out of control

Friends of the Earth says:

  • Huge air transport growth isn't inevitable or necessary - the Government need to manage demand and develop the alternatives.
  • Airlines and airports should pay for the problems they cause.
  • The UK Government needs to rethink its destructive aviation policy.
