Changing the way we travel

Image of heavy traffic

There's too much traffic on Britain's roads. This doesn't just cause congestion, it also contributes to climate change.

We need to change our travel behaviour to reduce transport's contribution to climate change.

This means

  • Changing how much we travel
Using local shops and services, working from home and having business meetings via videoconferencing.
  • Changing how we travel
Using cars less and alternatives such as public transport, walking and cycling more.

Did you know?

We can cut transport's contribution to climate change by 60% by 2030.

Instead of spending money on promoting these solutions, the Government are building new roads and failing to give financial incentives for us to use public transport.

Since 1997, the cost of motoring (allowing for inflation) has fallen whereas the cost of public transport continues to rise.

Friends of the Earth says:

The Government should spend less on building roads and more on improving alternatives to the car.
