What is Sustainable Transport?

Stockport Friends of the Earth Logo

To be sustainable, the resources needed to create and fuel all modes of transport, and absorb the consequent waste must be within the means of the planet.

If we travelled in ways that actually benefited our health and our environment, we would have safe roads, cleaner air and a better quality of life.

  • Smarter Choices

Techniques for influencing people's travel behaviour towards more sustainable options such as encouraging school, workplace and individualised travel planning.

  • Travel plan

A package of measures produced by employers to encourage staff to use alternatives to single-occupancy car-use.

  • School Travel

Promoting safe and healthy journeys to school which can also help to reduce the use of the car and the impact of the 'school run'.

  • Travel awareness

Campaigns to improve general public understanding of the problems caused by traffic growth and to encourage people to think about their own travel behaviour. e.g. In Town Without My Car days.

  • Walking

Promoting walking as a healthy and more preferable option to the motor car for short journeys.

  • Cycling

Strategies for promoting cycling as an alternative form of transport for local journeys.

Less miles, more smiles.

Reduce the need to travel through better planning or measures such as video-conferencing.
